This week I got a bit sick. Straight up ill, my stomach kept me up all night. As I was keeled over in the bathroom at 4am feeling icky, I thought of a line from my guru Gabrielle Bernstein. Gabby says every situation in our lives is perfect because what happens is either what we want or if not it is a lesson to learn and then teach. The greatest lesson she teaches is that in a situations that appear negative that lesson may be difficult to see, but it is always there.
So in that moment feeling sick and alone at 4 am in the bathroom I thought of this Gabby lesson and asked the Universe to help me discover that lesson quickly please because I was so focused on feeling icky I could not see a lesson in sight, just stomach flu. When I got back in bed finally the lesson came to me, what I would learn & teach from my experience of being sick in the middle of the night…
When we’re sick we are hyper-aware of our body. Fo instance, when you’ve just had the stomach flu or food poisoning, you would never stuff yourself over full of crap, rather you listen to what your stomach is asking for and give your body exactly what it needs, nothing more, nothing less.
Why do we stop that extreme self-care after we start to feel better? Why do we stop listening when our bodies our functioning optimally?
Listening to our body is crucial and they usually speak to us pretty softly, so we really have to tune in. Getting ill is just your body yelling at you to listen to it and give it what it needs & wants. We completely take care of our bodies to heal ourselves from illness, but rather than waiting for that screaming message from our bodies lets listen to its much softer everyday voice so illness isn’t needed for us to hear our body’s messages and honor them. With care, rest, and healthy foods.
Be as aware of your body when you are healthy as when you are sick. Take care of yourself. Put self care first.
